Poetry: Drinking

BLINDED

There's this woman
that I know...
very smart and witty,
not exactly beautiful,
but really quite pretty
in a natural,
home-grown sort of way.

She has three great kids,
a good job,
a couple of dogs,
and an alcoholic husband.

She's friendly,
outgoing, compassionate, and
she has this really beautiful smile
that she shares with everyone.

She doesn't ask much from life,
just a little peace and happiness,
and more than a one-sided marriage

but he holds her down,
droning out the same promises
over and over
until he's hypnotized her
into believing them.

He calls her fat,
even though she's three sizes
smaller than me,
and I think I look pretty good.

He tells her she's irresponsible,
even though she pays the bills
with her paycheck,
since he doesn't get one.

He tells her he loves her,
even though he blackened
her eye,
and left bruises on her throat
because she had the nerve
to tell him...

Stop drinking,
get a job,
love me just
a little bit.

But she's a good girl,
and believes in him,
thinking like all women
that she'll change him
and life will get better.

The kids will grow up
well-adjusted,
and they'll all live
happily ever after,
even as she watches him
tilt the bottle
to his lips again.

Drinking was part of my past,
    growing went way to fast.
    For no parents I had,
cause they were both at the bar.
