Preparing for a hurricane

We are now in the midst of the dreaded hurricane season, the time of year when all the elements come together, and create the prime environment for hurricane formation. Given the number of catastrophic storms we had two years ago, many people were worried, and panicked into stocking up on supplies last year only to have a very mild season. That is no reason to slack off this year, as it is very possible to have a strong season, as the weather is currently changing and very possibly for the worst.

There are some supplies you will need if you decide to ride out a storm, which is not a recommended idea, unless you are required to. If you make the decision to ride out a storm, you will need the essentials, food, water, a propane stove with propane, cooking supplies, any medications, a cell phone with automotive charger, 2 way radios with rechargeable batteries, a power inverter for your vehicle, a vehicle with a topped off fuel tank, a flashlight, a radio, and batteries. These supplies will be needed in the days following a storm, as a hurricane can destroy many of these items as it works its way along its path.

A general estimate is 1 gallon a day to drink, and 2 gallons a day for hygiene. The water used for hygiene can be held in a bath tub, whereas the drinking water should be kept in coolers.

Any medication you are on is a must have, and dont just bring a few days worth, bring the whole bottle. The reason for this is simple, you may not be able to get a refil for several days, of not weeks. Your cell phone will become a handy tool, as long as you can keep your battery charged. A good idea to purchase is a set of two-way radios, incase phone communication is not possible, this way you can keep in touch with each other in the coming days. Flashlights and radios require batteries, and you should have a supply of batteries to keep these running for several days, which will be 3 to 4 sets per item. The radio
