Natural remedies for springtime allergies

Spring has sprung, the flowers are blooming, the trees are budding, and if you are like thousands of others, your eyes are watering, your nose is running, your throat is scratchy - Welcome to Allergy Season! If you are one of the many who have spent countless springs looking at the world through red, itchy, watering eyes, help may be closer than you think.

Before you reach for those potentially dangerous over-the-counter allergy relief medications, first look to your stash of essential oils. By utilizing the healing power of Aromatherapy, it is possible to not only reduce, but sometimes even completely remove, seasonal allergy symptoms. Many Essential oils are know for their antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, but few people are aware that there are a select group of oils that also provide anti-histiminic and anti-allergenic properties. Oils such as German Chamomile, Black Pepper, and Helichrysum are very helpful in dealing with seasonal allergies, relieving many of the uncomfortable symptoms, in an all natural form. Studies have shown that using blends made with these oils does provide relief to seasonal allergy sufferers, without any of the harsh side-effects of over the counter medications.

Essential oils are all natural, without any additives or preservatives, and work immediately in the body to boost the energy level, and begin not only a physical, but an emotional and spiritual healing. Below is a synergistic allergy blend that can be applied via massage, or used directly in a diffuser to provide relief from allergy symptoms such as sneezing, coughing, itchy, watery eyes, and sleeplessness.

10 drops Eucalyptus
10 drops Lavender
5 drops Cedarwood
5 drops Peppermint
3 drops Helichrysum

Mix oils together gently, and store in a dark bottle, in a cool place. To use, add 10-12 drops to 1 oz of carrier oil and massage into upper chest and back, or add 3-5 drops to diffuser and diffuse for up to 10 minutes per hour.

Often times, relief from blocked, swollen nasal passages can come from simply diffusing Tea Tree Oil and Grapefruit Oil. These oils not only boost the immune system but relieve dry itchy eyes and throat, open blocked nasal passages, restore free breathing, and are very energizing when the symptoms of allergies get you down. Diffusing Eucalyptus and Peppermint are also very helpful, and are much more portable when placed in a "sniffy" bottle. Blend together 2-3 drops of each oil in a small glass vial, with about a tablespoon of rock salt. Simply uncap and sniff as needed. Remember that these 2 oils are stimulating, and should probably not be used just before bed.

Keep in mind that only the highest quality essential oils should be used, and that less is always more. Know your Essential oil dealer, and brands, and ask plenty of questions. When in doubt, always ask. Never apply oils directly to skin or take internally. Essential oils are the prana, the life essence of the plant from which they are harvested, and should be treated with respect and attention to detail. If you treat them with care, they will certainly return the favor.
