Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is seriously under-diagnosed. Many doctors are completely unfamiliar with the affliction. It took my mother about three years and countless doctors before someone correctly diagnosed her. We went to "the best of the best" and certainly paid for it. Unable to figure out what was wrong, some doctors had the gall to tell her that it must have been all in her head! Anyone who has suffered from Chronic Fatigue, or witnessed someone's suffering will certainly agree that it is a real affliction, not to be chalked up to hypochondria. As it turns out, the doctor who was able to attribute my mother's ordeal to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome was the now deceased Dr. Atkins. This was about ten years ago, and after hearing all of the rumors about his alternative practices - my mother at the end of her rope by this point - gave him a shot. Not only did he correctly diagnose her, but he offered her an alternative to taking a bunch of prescription pills. Ready to try anything, my mother cut out a lot of the sugars she was eating and a lot of the carbohydrates. He explained to her which foods in particular were slowing down her body. A big part of his treatment also included a lot of vitamins and supplements that her body was lacking. It was a process, in some ways similar to the famous weight loss diets but with different intentions and with different results. She had to first clear out her system and eliminate a lot of foods from her diet, but was able to eventually reincorporate some in moderation. The complete turn around she made was truly astonishing, and certainly taught us that prescriptions and pills aren't always the answer. To this day my entire family thinks nothing but the best of Dr. Atkins, and we all mourned his loss. My mom has not found anyone who can fully replace him. After the very first week, my mother was able to get out of bed and resume her normal routine. Not only was she physically recovering, but she was finally hopeful that she would in fact get better, and was therefore emotionally and psychologically better as well. By the time we went to Atkins, my mother had lost an unhealthy amount of weight, couldn't make it through a day's activities, was suffering from depression, was having panic attacks, and wasn't sure if she really was going crazy since no one knew what was wrong with her. My family was not a believer in alternative medicine, but after the complete recovery my mother made, it was hard to deny it. Today she is over fifty and has more energy than anyone I know. She still monitors her diet and takes vitamins, and has not relapsed into any state of fatigue since. Keep an open mind about ways to stay healthy. And although many people did not agree with Dr. Atkins, I know from personal experience that he succeeded where other doctors had failed. Alternative health practices are more than capable of keeping people healthy.
