The case for reinstating the military draft in the USA

"Do We Need To Bring Back The Draft?"

As unpopular as the notion may seem, it is time for us to ask ourselves a serious, question, do we need to bring back the draft? Like it or not, the adventurism of the Bush Administration has placed this nation in a most precarious position. According to all prognostications, we are going to have to remain in Iraq or its immediate vicinity for some time to come, perhaps generations. While there is general agreement among Democrats that some form of withdrawal has been mandated, the how or when of such a withdrawal is what remains murky. All of the leading Democratic presidential contenders are for the most part, keeping their options open as it relates to Iraq. John Edwards says he'd keep troops in the region to intervene if Iraqis resorted to genocide, or is violence spills into other countries in the region.

Hillary Rodham Clinton would also leave what she refers to as residual forces to fight terrorism and to stabilize the Kurdish region in the north. Barack Obama would leave a military presence of unspecified size in Iraq to provide security for American personnel to fight terrorism and to train Iraqis. Bill Richardson, the New Mexico Governor departs from the rest by stating, "I have a one-point plan to get out of Iraq get out, get out!" Sen. Joe Biden would split Iraq into three regions for the three major ethnic and religious groups, until a stable government could be formed. All concerned are in general agreement that ending a was can often be more complicated than starting one. Second tier candidate Denis Kucinich say flat out he would end the war by withdrawing troops immediately. He refuses to read the tea leafs and predict dire consequences for such a move by stating no one knows what will happen when our troops withdraw.

Having set the context for the question first posed above, some rational for a yes answer might prove useful. We have constantly been told by George Bush and various members of his Administration that we are a nation at war. In other wars we as a nation have been asked to sacrifice. While we may be engaged in the most daunting and uncharacteristic war of our short existence, we have not been asked to sacrifice anything. To the contrary, the President response has been to cut taxes for the rich and to compound that idiocy with suggesting that corporations should enjoy a similar benefit. Mr. Bush has stretched our armed forces to the breaking point, but has refused to endorse re instituting the
