I raise a glass to Don and Peg, on the occasion of their 60th anniversary of marriage..
Together, they have accomplished much. They have built a great house, the many rooms of which are full of family and friends. Together they have filled this house with life and made it something to be admired, for it's a house that has been built upon the cornerstones of honor, integrity and trust.
The fourth cornerstone the most important one is love, and it's here that the foundation of this great house starts, and it's here that it ends.
Some are never given the chance to build something so grand. Some are given the chance and discard it as if it were yesterday's newspaper. Others see it through, and accomplish magnificent things. Still others suffer in silence for many years, vainly and pointlessly wishing for something better, as if that were possible. As if there were something better than a house like this.
Inside, the warm glow of the fireplace fills the living room with a peaceful and quiet joy. Visitors often drop in just to bask for a short time before taking a bit of it with them as they depart to their own homes and loved ones. The wallpaper illustrates a lifetime of memories that have been etched into it by the sharp quills of experience, while the mirrors of the great house reflect the character of those who live within.
The kitchen smells of freshly baked bread and caring. From here, the residents of this house have been fed nourishing meals and delectable cookies, all of which have been seasoned with a grandmother's love. Just outside of the kitchen sits the workshop, where many a chair, bed and chest have come into existence for the residents to sit on, lie in and fill up. Sturdier furniture can't be found, for it's a granddad's love that holds these items together.
As one ventures up the grand staircase, one finds that some rooms are filled with laughter, happiness and noisy life, while others are darkened and quiet with just a lone candle burning, having once been occupied by loved ones and friends who have ventured out into the foggy night, to be seen again someday when the fog has lifted and a new sun has risen.
I raise a glass to Don and Peg, and their grand old house that is built on honor, integrity and trust. These three cornerstones shall never be shaken by doubt and uncertainty; nay, they shall stand forever.
I raise a glass to Don and Peg, and their love. It's this foundation that makes the house complete, and which makes it a home. Today that home is sixty years old, and although twilight is descending and the shades are slowly being drawn, the family and friends who occupy this grand old home have all gathered to raise their own glasses and collectively shout from the rooftop for all to hear..
