As a thirteen year old who writes a consistent blog, writes articles here, and will have her first part-time job on Wednesday, I am passionate about this issue. My family isn't 'poor', but we're close to it. Some months it's a struggle to eat much more than ramen noodles.
I think that how young someone should start working depends on what you mean by 'work'. I've been running to and from the bathroom for Daddy's medications since I was three or four, up until I was twelve. That's the sort of work to start young. Something. For a couple years, I got a toonie every week for my little errands.
Working for an actual boss is something else. Working online is a great idea for young teenagers and even 'tweens'. Young people can host yard sales, sell crafts, and other things. I don't think you should be putting a young teenager in a McDonalds or a factory, but they should be able to work.
There are a few good reasons to allow a young teen to work outside the home, and even inside the home (ex. a load of dishes for $5.00):
-It builds a work ethic. Kids who work are more likely to hold down a good job when they're older and work hard, contributing to society as best they can. They understand that nothing is free.
-Those who work from a young age tend to be more financially responsible. Think about it. When you're earning your own money, it's your heard-earned cash. You're a lot less likely to rush out and spend it, and more likely to save it.
-With work comes the ability to sympathise with parents. It also provides the ability to deal with pressure, to deal with problems and several other things.
I think that kids should be allowed to work. Never force them to work. But let them if they want to. Personally, I really want to get started on that part time job. If my mother tried to stop me, there'd be a huge argument. I want to be able to pay my own way. I hate taking charity.
And I don't mind if it means I miss out on a chunk of irresponsibility and childhood-I had an amazing childhood until I was eleven, and I think that's enough for me. Now I just want to be seen as an adult-someone with real value in the work place.
