Depo-Provera: The worst type of birth control out there

Depo Provera has been, for many women, the worst type of birth control out there. This article contains several reasons why it is a good idea to consider the side effects of Depo before deciding to use it as your form of birth control.

Depo Provera is a form of birth control given by injection during the menstrual period. If a woman receives their depo injection within the first five days of menstruation, it will become effective within 24 hours. If given any later, Depo could take up to 14 days to become effective. It is advised to use a form of back-up contraception during the first 14 days just to be safe. Depo Provera remains effective for 13 weeks so it is advised for women to schedule their next injection 11 weeks after their first. If a woman cannot make it to her appointment for her next injection, she will have to use a form of backup birth control and wait until menstruation has begun again to receive her next injection. Most women, actually, are advised to use a form of back-up birth control the entire time they use Depo Provera because it provides no form of protection from reproductive infections or sexually transmitted diseases. If a woman receives the Depo injection she, of course, cannot use any type of birth control pill or other hormone based backup contraceptive while she is on Depo. This only leaves about one option - Condoms! Condoms are almost as effective as Depo in preventing pregancy and they also offer protection against infections and sexually transmitted diseases - leaving Depo useless.

If the above information didn't convince you that Depo Provera is the worst type of birth control out there, keep reading. Depo Provera comes with many side effects and disadvantages. Depo Provera, in a recent study, was associated with loss of bone density which could result in osteoporosis. This loss of bone density is not recovered or reversed after stopping Depo. Women who have used Depo Provera for two years or more are advised to have a bone density test performed.

Depo Provera could wreak havoc on your body if you have an allergy to it - and how else would you find out except to receive the injection? Depo also brings with it a woman's worst enemy - weight gain. Seventy percent of women will gain weight while using depo. Many of those women gain more than 10 pounds. We all know that weight is much easier to gain than it is to lose. Other side effects may come with using Depo include irregular, heavy, or even no bleeding at all. In my opinion,
