for now and for eternity.
To shelter a child is not bad in and of itself. Nor is it bad to shelter their minds to a certain point. If we have taught them to guard their hearts against evil things, then we must stop sheltering them as soon as possible.
But, to tell a teacher he or she should not, cannot, teach what ought to be taught (upon which was decided by knowledgeable folks with guarded hearts who see the value in a good education) is wrong. Demanding such sheltering of children is a disservice to those children and will affect whole communities of thought in the future, all because some parents have not seen to guarding their children's hearts! Asenine.
A guarded heart frees a mind to experience all things in such a fashion as to discern right from wrong, good from evil, truth from lies. A guarded heart protects the mind from swaying easily into dangerous situations, whereas an unguarded heart opens the mind to countless dangers of the world. An unguarded heart coupled with a sheltered mind cannot discern the good from the bad, and the two are indeed in danger of accepting anything as truth.
My job as the teacher of English in the tenth grade is to expose young adults to all forms of literature and all kinds of universal themes that are indicative of the world in which we live. My duty as a teacher is to make sure the students have the skills and the tools of the arts of the English language. When my students take these standardized tests, when they leave my classroom at the end of the year, when they encounter situations in the world for the rest of their lives, they stand a greater chance of succeeding because they have been exposed to all that I have taught them.
If students do not know what mythology is, then they will not know how to deal with it when it comes into their lives.
To understand how the world works and what the world has to offer, students need to be prepared. Any disservice, whether by parent or teacher, in the children's education will set them up for failure, with which they may not be ready to deal.
How can we understand different peoples from different cultures if we do not study who and what they are about?
How can we deal with new situations if we have not dealt with similar situations in a safe arena like a classroom where we study such details of new and different situations through literature and language?
I believe what the public school curricula offer is worthwhile and safe for the children to learn. Something is to be learned from
