Book reviews: Carrie, by Stephen King

I read that Carrie, was in fact Steven Kings first novel, which he wrote whilst teaching. After having written it, not confident enough to submit for publishing he threw it in the bin. His wife Tabitha, however had more faith and submitted it for him. And so began Steven Kings meteoric rise to fame as arguably the most successful horror writer of our time. Carrie possessed all the teenage angst that we all can invariably relate to , with the exception that when Carrie reached puberty, a dormant talent of telekinesis came to the fore. After being subjected to mental torture by her religious zealot of a mother, and both mental and physical torture by her peers, when she at last thought she was being accepted, the final act of humiliation was dumped on her in the form of a bucket of pigs blood. At her high school prom, in front of everybody, including the teacher who had taken pity on her, Carries sanity is finally pushed to breaking point, and her revenge is exacted on guilty and innocent parties alike. For the first time ever though, I actually enjoyed the film more than the book, with sterling performances from both Piper Laurie and Cissy Spacek
