Luther's ideas cost him and Europe. War, plague, famine, and death. When counting the cost to Georgia (country not the state) of communism then one sees Karl got his wish because revolution and counter-revolutionary actions killed millions.
Not to say republicanism and capitalism have been completely successful. However, these ideals have more room to evolve and therefore grow beyond problems. Communism could have evolved but Lenin, then Stalin set in stone a very rigid system which made such growth almost impossible.
Students have asked me about anarchy which I feel is a communist utopia where all get along without the need of government to make sure we do. We would share all, regulate ourselves, and pull together when things went wrong or bad stuff happened. The problem is again; us. We like different colors, enjoy different music and art, and finally at times like to be in competition with others for limited resources.
Many nations have blended democracy, capitalism, communism, and socialism with varying degrees of success. Each of those isms require us to adhere to principals which for some reason makes the best person rebel at times. Ferris said it best, "I am against all isms." Which is in and of it's self an ism.
The main problem with Communism is human nature which like gravity is a law not just a good idea. We like different things, want different things, and we don't agree on much or for very long. Adam Smith had it right and doomed Communism before little Karl was even an immoral thought, "while we have unlimited wants there are limited resources forcing us to compete."
One plus side its part of our evolution as a species which means at least we are still growing and not dying.
