Management of ones debt can be a chore, especially when your debt is out of control. Here are some tips for keeping your debit under control as well as tips on what to do if you let your debt consume you.
Set up a budget:
In today's computer savvy world setting up a budget does not have to be that hard of a task. Excel can do the calculations for you once you input all of the information. The easiest budget is one that is set for the entire month. This will make it easier to keep track of and update each month. Start your first column with the dates you get paid, the next column should be the amount of money you are getting paid and you need a column for expenses. Total your income for the month and list all of the expenses for the month, total them as well. To find out if you are in the hole, able to stay a float or if you have money left over, subtract the expenses from the income and this will give you your answer.
Make saving a priority:
If you don't have money left over save change or what ever you have left in your wallet at the end of the month. Even if you have 5 dollars a month left over save it. Every little bit saved helps with purchases you might have down the road. Put savings into your expenses to make sure that you put money back for things you might want to purchase or house hold repairs. The more you save and have on hand the less you have to charge.
Pay yourself back:
Sometimes you will need to pull money from your savings to pay for unforeseen expenses. If and when this does happen, pay yourself back or replace the money. The next time you have extra money put it back into your savings don't spend it just because you have it. You have to have discipline to manage your debt.
If your debt gets out of control what do you do?
Contact your credit card companies:
Most companies will work with you for a while to help you manage your account with them. They would rather receive some money then no money at all; they might even lower the interest rates or have programs to help get your account current. If this is not the case, pay what you can and research other options.
Use debt management programs:
Watch out for debt management programs, some are good but some are shady. Ask your credit card companies if they know of any companies that might be able to help you. When you do find one that you think you might want to talk to, make sure to do plenty of research on that company. Check the Better Business Bureau to see if they have any complaints. Ask questions of the company, how does it work, who is in charge, can I still talk with my credit cards, and how much money gets paid to the debt.
If you have had to clean up your credit the last thing to do is to rebuild your credit. Once you rebuild set your budget and keep your debt in check.
