The Bermuda Triangle, also called the Devil's Triangle, lies within the triangular area with points at Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico. A number of disappearances of ships and planes have been reported, supposedly in this area of the Atlantic Ocean.
Serious interest in the Bermuda Triangle began after five Navy planes, also called Flight 19, disappeared during a training mission in 1945. The realistic theory is that the planes flew off-course during a storm and ran out of gas.
It has also been reported that Columbus' logs tell of strange lights and compass malfunctions. Many believe that the lights were Indian campfires on the shore, and that the compass problems were only navigational miscalculations.
One of the explanations for the disappearances are methane eruptions which can produce frothy water that loses its buoyancy, causing ships to sink. According to the United States Geological Survey in 1981, no large gas hydrate releases had occurred in the Bermuda Triangle in 15,000 years.
According to the Navy (history.Navy.mil) "During the past century more than 50 ships and 20 aircraft sailed into oblivion in the area known as the Devil's Triangle, Bermuda Triangle, Hoodoo Sea, or a host of other names." They state that it is not known what happened to these ships and planes, and most vanished without a trace with little or no debris found.
"Into the Bermuda Triangle" by Gian J. Quasar relates the experiences of eyewitnesses and survivors of strange events in the mysterious Bermuda Triangle.
What we do know is that there is as much proof FOR the reality of the Bermuda Triangle's mysteries as there is AGAINST them. It is a matter of choice to believe or not.
