The facts and figures of the issue are well dealt with in other articles, so I will not labour on them here. Instead I will simply offer my personal experiences; I have attended both single sex (all boys) and mixed schools. I can proudly say that the single sex schools have won hands down. The problem is not so much that girls provide any kind of distraction for boys - at least no more so than football, cricket or rowing do. I have found myself infatuated with girls despite attending an all-male school on many occasions!

As I see it, the problem is rather that there is something of a social stigma attached to wanting to learn - and as we all know, the desire to learn is the single most fundamental cornerstone to a good learning process. The problem is not all inside lessons either. At a mixed school, I found myself unwilling to attend voluntary lectures or do a little background reading on my subjects because of the pressure of my peers, especially those of the opposite sex.

However, I found that at single-sex schools, the whole learning ethos among the pupils themselves is very much different; it is supportive and even admiring of those pupils at the top of the learning ladder and indeed of those striving to climb it.

The other brilliant aspect of single-sex education, particularly at boarding school, is that the opposite sex are admired and have time set aside for them outside of school hours, which means that time management becomes beautifully efficient.

Floreat single-sex schooling!
