Song reviews: Something in the Way, by Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain was, even until this day, one of the last of music's greats.
Many people state that he was nothing more than a drug addict that took his own life, but you have to look past that. We did after all elect George Bush to be president.

Something in the Way was probably, in my opinion, the song that most explains what went on in his mind. It lets people into his true feelings. Unlike so many other songs of his, Something in the Way, is not something that he just wrote. This song sums up in the few lines that it has, his exact feelings of life and how he felt about it.

Something was in his way. That something is a mystery to all, now that he is dead. It talks about how he spent his whole life feeling. Under neath a bridge. Nothing ever went right. He had the whole world at his fingertips, and he thought that he would be happy with that, but it turned out, that wasn't what he wanted either.

Lets break it down line for line

Underneath the bridge
The tarp has sprung a leak
And the animals I've trapped
Have all become my pets
And I'm living off of grass
And the drippings from the ceiling
It's okay to eat fish
Because they don't have any feelings

The first line talks about the time he spent (supposedly) living under the bridge in Aberdeen, Washington. It was not a fun experience I'm sure, but it was all that he had.

The tarp above his head, holding out the water, like everything else in his life, had failed, and he was left to take the brunt of it.

The animals he's talking about trapping, (In my opinion), are the fans. He can't completely control them, but they are his nonetheless. Free for him to form and mold anyway they want. Just take a look at what happened after his death. It didn't go unnoticed. Much like you would expect to see a pet dog mourning over it's master.

Living off of marijuana and alcohol. Drugs were a big part of his life. It numbed him to the frightening concept of reality.

It's okay to take advantage of things that don't have feelings, because they don't care anyway. Kurt used people, and he knew it. That's just who he was. I don't think any less of him. It's not his fault that people allowed him to use them.

This is one of the most heartfelt songs, about never having any hope at all, that I have ever heard.
