Scooters as an urban and environmental alternative to cars

Scooters better than cars? If we compare the pros and cons of using a scooter or using a car to get around in the big city the scooter definately comes out on top. Scooters are cheaper and cost less to run, they do not have the speed of a car, but the likeliness of a scooter to scooter head-on collision is slim to none.
Scooters are much smaller than cars and would help cut down on traffic congestion in those crowded streets, though slower you might find the scooter might actually get you to work faster than a car.
Scooters pollute less than cars usually. Of course if you were driving a vespa made in 1962 and comparing it to a Toyota made today they toyota would come out of top, but a vespa or scooter made today is going to show better mileage yeilds per gallon. Better mileage means less money and less polution, but then we're Americans and we'll never get rid of the cars, right?

Wrong, when I was living in Houston I saw zero scooters, vespas, or mopeds being used, but when I was living in Boulder and Pittsburgh it seemed everyday I saw more scooters, more mopeds, and more vespas popping up on the city streets.
I wonder though why doesn't the scooter make it's way into the mid sized cities like Greenville, SC where some things are too far to walk, but do you really need a car to pick up a c.d. from the record store ten miles away? Take a scooter, save some money then you can buy two c.d.s. Or even why hasn't the scooter made it's way into small towns or rural america. I also lived in Waco, TX and I understand that rural America uses trucks and tractors for their farm work, but couldn't they save a little more money if they used a scooter when they didn't need the F-350?
In the same sense, I worked at an equine hospitol that used a tractor to drag the feed trailor around, but I eventually convinced the Doc to invest in a John Deere Gator (you see them carrying the water buckets at your local high school football games) and when we started feeding out of the back of the gator we ended up saving a little over a thousand dollars a month.
Honestly America, if you want to save a little money and clean up the air a little bit then think smaller. Keep the hummer if you want, but only use it when you need to.
Whatever happened to good old fashioned walking anyway? Easterners be proud! Easterners walk everywhere compared to the rest of this country, Texans get in their car to go one block.
Extend the use of scooters and feet across the country, not just in the urban areas.
