I have read the writings of "Old Time Religion" figures such as Cotton Mather, and others from the 19th century much later. I must say that my reaction is quite mixed. On the one hand, there often comes across a purity of belief, and in the case of the famous Puritan leader, a dedication to his son's appreciation of Christian tenets. On the other hand, I wonder what it would be like actually living amongst these people - and let me get right to the point. The Bible says (the apostle Paul writing in his letter to the Christians in that most decadent of Rome's cities, Corinth) that all the knowledge, specificity of belief, and various manifestations of those beliefs are nothing without the love of Christ. I am not entirely convinced that some of history's enthusiatic believers would come across as particularly concerned about another person's life - their actual experiences and struggles and feelings. Would they, being filled with righteous entitlement, run roughshod over others' every sentiment, regardless of age, experience, and even their God-given insights? If so, I would have some things to say, even if these people were very demonstrative in their religious fervor. But if their "Old-Time-Religion" was prompting them to care for society's wounded and marginalised, tended to give those who are seeking a walk with God others with whom they might meaningfully fellowship, and if their personal conduct lines up with their worship.....break out the banjo & the piano and start cooking for the picnic. It might be a nice alternative to the state of affairs which our globalist watchers and manipulators have cooked up for us at the present time. I just had to throw that in, since Christians should also be aware of the world around them.
