There are a lot of opinions on when and how to talk to your kids about sex and drugs. Growing up, sex and drugs was taboo. This made me more curious about it and why it was 'bad' (by it being taboo, that said to me that it was bad). Needless to say, I experimented with it all. So, not talking about it with your kids will make them more curious and they are going to go to their friends for answers. Then when they get into trouble, it is a little too late to talk to them about it; not to mention the parents sit there and wonder how it got to this point. They figure that by not talking about it the kids won't think about those subjects.
My take on this subject is that when they come to you and start asking questions, give them honest answers. If they are asking, they are ready for answers (even if you aren't...just remember it is about them, not you). There is no better defense than being armed with knowledge...the correct knowledge. Parents can't prevent all things from happening to their kids. Kids will make their own decisions, whether you like those decisions or not. They are independent, free thinking individuals. But, if you give them honest answers to their questions about sex and drugs, they will be able to make better decisions, especially if they know the consequences of having sex and doing drugs/drinking.
In short, listen to them first and make them feel that they can ask you anything (create a safe environment where there will be no 'punishment' for anything they say/ask). Then, give them honest answers. This will not only allow them to make better decisions, but it will build a better/closer relationship between you and your kids.
