The problem with the second amendment is that it was never about self-defense or national security. It was about slave control.
In 1788, the Constitution was a struggle. It required that nine states ratify it and if not ratified, there would be no United States. At the time, only eight states had ratified it. Virgina was fairly split on the issue and was considered a possibility for ratification.
The issue at hand was that the state was 50% black and white lived in fear of a slave uprising. The Virginia militia was really important to slave control and the Constitution would make the militia controlled by Congress... and not Virginia.
