"When she was good she was very, very good and when she was bad she was horrid." That line from Longfellow may have been well directed towards the presentation of the daily news. When exactly was the last time you heard good news? Good heart wrenching news about something or someone that has made a positive contribution to the world we live in. Not often unfortunately. We are fed a constant diet of the unsavory and unsatisfactory in almost everything we read or watch. Television has become depressing. The newspapers are best for putting under the cat litter box. What is wrong with us?
Criminals gain notoriety while hero's fade into obscurity. Have we all become crime worshipers? The fact that we can possibly all name several well known criminals whom have been in the news of late for instance but would be hard pressed to name a single person who has made a positive contribution to our lives or community says a lot for what the news makes important. That came home to me personally. I was once presented with a public service medal for my Peace efforts, even appearing on the front page of the newspaper... for about thirty seconds. The rest for weeks either side however was to cover a fellow country woman who had been tried for drug smuggling in Indonesia. She even appears in Wikipedia and, you guessed it, I was consigned to obscurity.
I want good news. The blogosphere needs to take note, we need good news. I am tired of war, tired of famine. I want to know more about what people are doing to curtail these things and not what they are doing to make it worse. There, I have rebelled. May not do me much good but I have made my case.
The country of Bhutan has a "Gross National Happiness" index. Life is measured by how happy the people are, not by how little they have because of the Trade Weighted index or how depressed they are because of the interest rises it causes. Happiness, what a strange idea it is that they should pursue happiness above all else. We could learn something here.
There is still good news out there, it just needs to be found. Maybe I will start a blog that only reports on good news. It might last five minutes.
