By entering into a war with Iraq in 2003 the United States were making a lasting commitment to the Iraqi people and they can not go back on this commitment whilst there is a chance for security and peace.
I supported the invasion at the time for humanitarian reasons and because I believed removing Saddam Hussein would send a message to despots that they could not defy the United Nations for 12 years and get away with it. However, the war was a botched job and the post-war planning was appalling.
Additionally, it is now clear that Iraq needed a strong hand to maintain order in a country carved out by Imperialist powers in the post World War 1 settlement. A country with no national cohesion due to religious factions.
It is grim, and nobody should pretend otherwise, but the US needs to restore order as a first priority before they leave a chaotic state in the heart of an unstable region.
Any policy is imperfect. This is possibly the best of the bad bunch, but it is a close call. Frankly, I'd hate to be the incumbent President right now.
