Travel destinations: Mexico

Mexico City is located in the Valley of Mexico also called the Valley of Anhuac, a large valley in the high plateaus at the center of Mexico. Originally built by the Aztecs in 1325, Mexico City is the capital of Mexico and the historical site upon which the great Aztec civilization flourished 3000 years ago. One of the oldest and largest cities in the world, the metropolitan area has a population of over 20 million people.

The Zocalo (City center) boasts the third largest square in the world and is a buzz for all things commercial, religious, edible and audible. It is really a place where everything is and where everything goes. After indulging one can go to the huge cathedral which is on the East side, to seek forgiveness.

One side of this big square is lined with gold, so to speak a whole street of shops dedicated to selling the precious gem. The area is surrounded by several old, magnificent buildings housing government property and operating as the hub for protectors of the flag. For every evening at 6:00 p.m. there is an honorable parade to lower the flag which is again hoisted the next morning. The event attracts locals and visitors alike, such splendor, such Honor, such style.

Mexicans are keen on their parks, seizing every opportunity to enjoy them. The city's oldest park - Alameda Park is located near the Zcalo. On weekends there are salsa and rock bands playing and an excellent Sunday puppet theater for the kids. Many interesting colonial style buildings, monuments and museums surround this park.

Mexico City stands out as a place where every corner is inhabited. There are people on the streets, in cars, trains and buses, in restaurants, strolling along the promenades, in buildings, in queues, in shops, viewing monuments and museums all the time. There is never a dull moment, it seems.

Paseo de la Reforma, the city's main thoroughfare, is an elegant boulevard lined with dozens of magnificent monuments including the much-photographed "El Angel" Independence Monument, which has become the unofficial trademark of Mexico City. It leads to Chapultepec Park the largest park in the city, boasting three of the over 150 museums in the city. It has its fair share of hustle and bustle, but it is appropriately
