If your company offers a decent layoff severance package, it may be better to get laid off. If you think the future of your company looks bleak, take the first layoff package you are offered-layoff packages tend to deteriorate with each wave.
Consider any alternate position within the same company carefully. It may be a good opportunity, but most likely it will not offer long-term prospects-after all the company couldn't offer those in the job you were hired to do. Also, bear in mind that if the alternate job doesn't work out, you may be both out of a job and-if your eventual termination does not qualify as a layoff-without a severance package.
Everyone has bills to pay, so you may have to accept an alternate offer. If you do, however, immediately start looking for a job at a new company. It's time to cash your severance check and find a company that values your talents.
