How to prepare for a camping trip

You may want to entertain the idea of participating in a local first aid class or at least bring along a book on the subject to be better prepared to deal with the unfortunate accidents that can and DO occur, every year at every park in the world.


If you are planning to go into the wilderness alone or with your significant other, much less of the above listed planning is necessary. There are still a few key points to remember, to avoid worst case scenarios. Always remember to tell someone close to you of your plans - when you are leaving, where you will be, and when to expect your return. This is critical, because if you are not tied down by a family then you are much more likely to be exploring your surroundings in greater depth, or be on the move night after night camping in a different part of your State or National Forest. You do not want to be at the bottom of some cave or hole with no one to ever come looking for you or at least alerting the authorities of your not returning home on time.
Now that you have those considerations out of the way, it is time to think about how you will feed yourselves while up in "God's Country". Everyone has different ideas regarding how food should be stored and prepared, but there are a few things to think about here as well. A good rule of thumb is to take along non perishable food items that keep well in different environments, as you can always buy meats, etc. locally and usually at a good price. If you are planning to live off the land, you had better be prepared with field guides to edible plants and berries, as well as the regulations and licensing requirements for hunting and fishing. One fun and easy way to prepare foods is with a Dutch Oven or Campfire Sandwich Maker. These are ways to cook foods together to avoid having many pots and pans involved to cook a meal, as well as leaving fewer cleanup tasks to manage. Trying different recipes and methods will add a whole new avenue of fun and adventure to the usually mundane activity of mealtime.
