This is really easy. Choosing a hotel is like choosing a place to live. You need to know what's important to you before you begin the search. Location is key. It might be the most luxurious, comfortable, elegant hotel, but if you don't like what you see when you look out the window or what environment you're in when you walk out the door, you won't be happy there. And using the star rating system is not a bad thing, but means nothing unless you are able to read the testimonials of former patrons. I once was searching for a hotel in South Beach and narrowed it down to two choices of the same rating. The difference between the two choices was that one was described by someone who had been a guest prior as having a smell of old sheets and mildew, while the other one was described as very simple and down to earth but clean and friendly. Needless to say I decided against the old sheet smell, went to the simple clean hotel, and had a really good time. It didn't hurt at all that the hotel I chose had a bar in the lobby that provided really good drinks. The bottom line is, look for a clean place in a good spot, spend within your budget, and I guarantee you will be happy with your choice.
