Constipation in pregnancy is quite common, it is caused by the pressure of the uterus on the rectum, also the pregnancy hormones slow down the transit of food through the digestive tract, iron tablets, and dehydration can also cause this condition.
The best remedy for constipation is plenty of fibre ie. cereals, vegetables fresh fruit. Drink plenty of water and fruit juice, gentle exercise ie. walking, can move things along. There are some laxatives your GP will prescribe for you if none of the above helps. If you notice blood in your stools don't panick its probably piles, very unpleasant and painful, inform your midwife or GP you will be given some cream for this. The main thing to remember is that if you have any concerns about anything atall contact your midwife he/she is there to help.
