Here's how I assume it goes. Fresh designer looks at old movies, old architecture, old fashion designs. Restyles something by barely changing details and then proclaims, "It's vintage and fabulous and will be the hot new trend!"
The media reports that said designer was highly acclaimed by the 2 celebrities in attendance at his show and the new design (clothes, shoes, bag, jewelry, whatever) is published in a magazine that most average Americans have never heard of.
Celebrity stylists immediately purchase the new design for their client who can barely pronounce the designers name. It is of course ridiculously expensive because such a limited amount of the design is being made. They will graciously wear it a week later to a party or club or restaurant and exclaim to the pack of drooling paparazzi that they love their new whatever. They will never wear this item again.
A year later, a cheaper version of the design shows up at Target and it is hugely popular. Whether it is good or not, the trend will trickle down for about 2 years until the whole country is sick of seeing it. (Ugg boots for example.)
Celebrities don't care whether Janie Sue in Minnesota is wearing gold ballet flats just like they do. They make money off of endorsement deals and promotional stuff. If wearing something is good for getting them media attention or money, they wear it. And most of the time, what they are wearing, they didn't pay for. So why do they care?
As Will Smith said, "Too many people spend money they haven't earned to buy things they don't want to impress people they don't like."
