In my experience, I've had much more success with consigning jewelry than selling it on eBay. In all fairness, eBay is a very quick and efficient method of selling jewelry or any other item, but the market is literally flooded with over a million jewelry items every day. These items typically sell at about 15 - 30 percent of their actual market value because there simply is too much competition. When jewelry is consigned, it usually takes a few weeks or even a few months to sell, but in most shops it sells at 70% of the market value or above.
When selecting a business to consign your jewelry, there are several things you want to research.
1. How much are their consignment fees? (10 - 18% is average)
2. Are other consigned pieces in the store displayed neatly in a visible area?
3. Does the store have a steady flow of customers?
4. Will the store compensate you if your item is lost, damaged or stolen?
5. When your item is sold, how soon can you expect payment?
6. How much do items similar to yours sell for?
If you are careful in selecting the jewelry store or boutique to sell your jewelry, then I am confident you will be pleased with the outcome. Although I don't recommend eBay for selling jewelry items, it is a fantastic place to buy jewelry at a fraction of its value. Perhaps you might consider purchasing jewelry items on eBay to sell at your local boutique.
