Impossible to compete with the fine descriptions already written here of the life and times of Siddhartha Gautama.
Instead, I will concentrate on who this man was in relation to what he did for this world, and what effect his teaching had on a barbaric world.
The most important thing that Siddhartha Gautama gave his world was "HOPE" - Let me spell that out, as this is vital to understanding what occurred - H O P E.
It's already been mentioned that there was much poverty, pain and illness, and also a great deal of what can only be described as savage and brutal behaviour, for this great man lived in a time that was uncivilised by any description - despite the great riches enjoyed by the elite.
The other thing that was lacking was any substance to man's spiritual nature, and it is this element that he brought to bear on a people badly in need of salvation.
For with his achievement of nirvana, he showed, one and all, that there was more to life than this physical plane, and this in itself was enough to inspire millions.
His teachings were important, but it is the "HOPE" he gave, that civilised the great nations of the day, as they took up his path, and sought nirvana..... but the civilisation of these masses was only possible because he brought "HOPE", that things could be better - that man was not an animal by nature and could rise above the beast.
While his teachings have become dispersed and somewhat esoteric, not to mention hidden, in this modern world, the great hope that came with his own salvation, is still with us today, to a degree, for disbelief in man's spiritual nature has already destroyed a lot of hope.
The reincarnation of Siddhartha Gautama is badly needed in todays barbaric world.
