The Reapers Retreat
Cold, and black your on your mark
Your eyes are empty, soul is dark
Thirst for sorrow is not yet parched
A lesson in pain, I am at the start
Icy fingers take my hand
You led me to unholy lands
All alone, yet here I stand
Who will face the Reaper, but one man
The battles begun, with fury, and fire
I'll give you all I have, as not to expire
Even though my situation seems dire
Death's mistake has raised my ire
In the end I stand strong
Death's retreat, to where it belongs
I will see you again before too long
Till then I'll rejoice in song

a gasping, choking thing, and then I cried,
loud

Pearl Levine 1916-1987
