If the last few fashion cycles have struggled to change the body shape (see: tent dresses or androgynous jacket/pant combos), the coming one will celebrate it, curve for curve. With cinched waists, elegant gloves and Veronica Lake waves topped with colorful hats, autumn/winter 2007 will see the return of the lady, forties style.
The Marc Jacobs runway show was a perfect indication of the decade switch. Whether they were worn over turtleneck knits or structured trenches, belts created an easy hourglass shape. Add to that solid black tights, below-the-knee skirts and bright red lips, and the look was complete.
Zac Posen - the man behind Gwyneth Paltrow's smashing 2007 Oscar dress - used curve-seamed suits and ruched skirts to show audiences that pretty is in the details. Posen's signature forties grace was as clear as ever, in colors of burgundy, violet, black and silver.
In London, designer Gavin Douglas was inspired by chic traveling women from days gone by. In satin, Swarovski-crystal buttoned shirts and form-flattering pencil skirts, his models looked ready to hop a plane to Paris.
To get a forties look of your own, try pairing a long-sleeved turtleneck with a soft a-line skirt that hits between the bottom of your kneecap and mid-calf. Find a leather belt (about a half-inch thick is perfect), and buckle it over your natural waist. Cover your legs with black or brown tights if you choose, and top it all off with either a wide-brimmed hat or sharp leather gloves.
For hair and makeup, sophistication is key. Brush through curled hair for a soft sheen, and keep eye colors simple except for a sweep of liquid black eyeliner across the top lid. Lips can be bright, from magenta to scarlet.
When weather gets cooler, you'll have a look to keep your style sense hot. Just follow these simple tips - and look back to the designers for more ideas - and you'll be turning heads in no time.
