Choosing whether or not to be a pharmacy technician is not as big of a decision as choosing most careers. It is simply taking the national exam and getting employed. The only cost you will be out is the cost of the exam which runs around $125. I suggest spending some time, while waiting on your test results, watching the techs at a retail pharmacy while you are shopping to see if that fast paced environment is what you desire. Hospitals and mail order pharmacies are extremely slow paced...so if a job with monotony gets to you then avoid working at either of these settings. Unfortunately there is not a happy medium, it is either rush rush rush or falling asleep at your desk. I am sure by the tone of this article that you have gathered enough to realize that I hate being a pharmacy technician. I tried every setting and every specialty available to me and I almost cry every time I have to go to work. I feel that I am too far deep to walk away now and that being a single mom in my 30's that would be a rash and immature decision. Some people truly enjoy being a pharmacy technician and you might be one of them. I recommend taking the exam and trying out a few settings and seeing if it is for you or not. You will know within a few months and you don't feel that this is a career that will make you happy and less stressful than say working at a fast food restaurant then walk away fast and don't waste anymore of your precious time. If you are reading this article on Helium then I would guess that writing is something that you enjoy so why not pursue that instead?
