If the article gets popular enough, it will move to the front page of the digg section it is in. There it may get thousands of hits. A thousand hits is worth ten dollars to you. Rarely a article gets super-popular getting thousands of diggs and tens or hundreds of thousands of hits. Imagine making $300 on an article that took you an hour to write.
So, write a good article on www.helium.com, post it to www.digg.com sit at home and hope for the best? That's it? Not hardly. There are several ways to increase your visibility on digg.
First of all, target articles to where you know you'll be popular. Digg started as a programming and science site and there are a million data nerds out there signed up. There are a ton of diggs available for sharp science and computer articles but these cats know their stuff. A sloppy article or misunderstood topic will get you buried and fast. A very good article of mine on gravitation that made $45 overnight on www.reddit.com, a similar site, fizzled in the withering gaze of the digg crowd. It only got four diggs, and made about two dollars. If you aren't sharp enough to impress these guys, don't give up. Digg also loves articles about Brittany Spears, videos of dogs falling in toilets and diatribes about the evils of Hillary Clinton. Stick with what you know. Any of these (especially the dog) could trigger a digg cascade. Sticking to what you know will help you not waste time with articles you can't fly.
Second, and this is the most important, make friends. like minded people are posting on digg all the time. Find people who write similar articles to yours and add them to your friends category. Post comments on their articles telling them why you liked their posting. Soon even average articles of yours will be getting bonus hits and diggs from friends of yours out there. This can be critically important. There is a buryier out there for ever reason under the sun. A random bury at the wrong moment will kill the momentum of your otherwise fine article. Having even a friend or two to provide a digg early on can keep your article alive. A friendly person whose posted a couple of hundred nice comments can give any article of there's a major boost. It's democracy in action out there and, in this case at least, nice guys win.
While I haven't started a full fledged digg cascade this way, this keeps my articles above the heads of the occasional detractor and generates me enough business to keep me going. Did you digg this article? I know I'm digging it right now.
