Basketball brawls: The 'thug mentality' of the NBA

I, too, am an avid fan of basketball. In fact, it is my favorite sport and I couldn't love it more. Although my preference lies with NCAA basketball, I pay adequate attention to the NBA and all that it entails.

And just what does that entail? One could answer competitiveness, sportsmanship, activity, games, scrimmages, athleticism...the list of obvious points goes on. However, playing on the big stage such as the NBA also comes with responsibility. These men are making more money than they have ever made. They are visible to millions of fans, both young and old. They represent entire cities. They are hired not only to play basketball but also to keep the fans happy.

Yes, there have been fights throughout all of sports history. What's changed is the media attention to something that is not new, but unfortunately becoming more relevant. How are parents and coaches supposed to teach their children and students a respectable manner of play when that is not what they are seeing? Children idolize professional athletes without regard to whether or not they cheat on their wives, get into a fight, or get caught with illegal substances. They see them on the court or in the locker room and it is up to each player to portray themselves in an acceptable manner to their fans.

I consider a thug to be one that hangs out on the street, trying to sell drugs or robbing homes or individuals. That is thuggish behavior. Certain industries accept or permit such behavior - one being the rap industry. However, I have never read or heard a moral code of sportsmanship in regards to rap. Rap has never been an organization that has heralded outstanding physical achievements and sportsmanship. Rap was not offered in school and rarely do you see a "rap team" coming together toward a single cause. Sports teach you so much more than rap lyrics.

I have played basketball my entire life. I cannot say enough that it is one of my greatest loves. Am I disappointed in the Rasheed Wallaces and the others? You bet I am. I'm saddened that basketball has become a war rather than a contest. Sure, there is a lot of money at stake in the NBA but what about self-pride? What about a positive public image? I say - if you don't want to suffer the consequences of ACTING like a "thug" on the court, get out of the NBA.
