If squirrels can be considered as pests, then this has been an experience that's been plaguing us for the last few years. For the longest time when my grandmother had owned the house, she's had a garden in the front yard and the backyard. It was basically your exotic garden where she would have all sorts of exotic plants in both yards. That pretty much got on my nerves because she kept planting one thing after another.
Then she gave the house to my mom and she was tending to the plants. In the back, we grow all sorts of exotic fruits. We have two star fruit trees. It's pretty logical because my mother enjoys star fruit. Star fruit at the grocery store gets to be pretty expensive. Both of the trees bear very ripe and very plump fruits every few months. We would give the fruit to family friends and so forth. I should've sold the fruits to my friends for some extra money. The fruits that we grow are happened to be far better than that we would see at the grocery store.
But the star fruits aren't the only thing we were growing. We have about two to three grapefruit trees that have been in the backyard since I was about six years old. Every few months, we get very large grapefruits which have to be plucked or they'll drop to the ground and go back. My mom makes me pick the grapefruits every few months because I happen to be the tallest.
We also have a few tangerine trees, a mango tree, a lime tree, and several lychee nut plants. We have all of these tropical and exotic fruits in the backyard. In the past this wasn't a problem. Within the last two years, we've been dealing with a very bothersome squirrel problem. They've been eating the fruits and destroying them. We didn't even have a chance to pick those fruits. When my mom went and picked the fruits, she noticed holes in the fruit as a result of gnawing.
Only squirrels seemed to be able to climb high enough and eat the fruit. My mom really dislikes the type of squirrels in the United States. She had a green squirrel a long time ago when she lived back in Vietnam as a child. In comparison of the squirrels, she found these brown squirrels to be very ugly.
We had gotten new neighbors that moved to a house right behind our house. They would have a black cat that would walk around. It seemed to make itself at home in our backyard. At first I thought the cat would be a bothersome pest. But the cat thought of us as pretty friendly. On a plus, the cat scared off all of the squirrels.
That cat could've climbed up where
