It used to be, "My girlfriend is pregnant and we need to get married fast." Now it's, "My boyfriend, or girlfriend, is in the military and he's/she's going overseas. We need to get married fast, before he/she leaves." But whatever the reason, you need to complete a few steps before you get married quickly.
First, go fill out the proper paperwork for your marriage license. Usually the town or city clerk in your area will have the important information. Make sure you have your birth certificate, a picture ID, and you social security card.
Second, read the terms of the license. Many places have a waiting period, but some places do not.
Third, call your city or town justice. Find out when the person if available to preform the service. Make sure it's in the time-frame that goes with the marriage license. Ask what you need to bring with you. How much the justice is allowed to charge, if anything, for performing the ceremony. Will you need to bring your own witnesses, ceremonial readings or anything else? Write down what s/he says and make sure you check each thing off as you put it in the car.
Finally show up on time. Repeat the words you're supposed to repeat and then make sure the marriage license is signed by all the appropriate parties. Make sure the person who is staying here files the marriage license in the appropriate time period. In some places, the person who performs the marriage files it. In that case, make sure the person doesn't forget and that it has been filed in accordance with the laws in your area.
If you've done everything properly, you're not married. Most people coming to see my Father had the marriage within two weeks of the initial request. Good luck.
