In the course of a life time of travel throughout the world, both for business and pleasure, tidbits of information have been garnered along the way that have been most useful. Considering the number of flights that take place daily, the millions of passengers flying and the incredible quantities of luggage that traverse the earth, it is amazing that so much of it actually arrives at baggage claim, having made the flight with you.

Of course, it is most disheartening to finally reach your European destination, weary from an overnight flight, to find your suitcases have not arrived. Nothing is gained from becoming irate and lashing out at the staff behind the baggage counter. A fellow passenger had everyone mesmerized once, when she pulled out two sheets of paper. On each was a scanned picture of each of her missing suitcases, along with a list of what was packed in each. She told the agent that she had two baggage tags on each suitcase and a label inside with her name and address at home and her contact info at her destination. We were all most impressed with this foresight!

A little planning can help minimize the possiblity of lost luggage. It is most important to arrive at the airport in adequate time to have your bags checked to make your outbound flight. Be sure there are legible luggage tags attached. Whenever possible, minimize the number of airport connections on your itinerary.

A frequent cruise passenger impressed the ticket agent with her habit of labeling luggage with a message stating the port, ship, cruise line, and sailing date of her cruise in the event her luggage was lost. She wanted to be sure that her bags would not be sent to her home if they were lost. She also made it a habit of arrive at her departure port a day in advance of her cruise and she always packed both some casual attire as well as cocktail dresses in each suitcases.

Packing a change of underwear and a few toiletries in your carry on bag are not a bad idea, in the event your luggage is lost. Also, try to remember that the baggage agent is not your enemy and they are invested in finding your luggage as quickly as possible. If you can give them accurate information in a calm, factual manner, it will help get you on your way more rapidly. Normally, airlines are very cooperative with each other about transporting found luggage and the airlines will have luggage delivery firms deliver it to your home or hotel very quickly after its arrival at the airport.
