Reflections: Give me that old time religion

When I saw the title, I immediately thought of that song, I, and hundreds of others sang many years ago, and I mean many.

I do love the old time religion, where we didn't feel inhibited when we felt the need to say Amen, or Praise the Lord. You scare people right out of church with any kind of emotion in this day and age.

People were different back then. They really, and truly showed their love for God, and without reservation.

It felt good to feel God's very presence all around you, and you could show how you felt. A warm feeling would start at the top of your head, and wash all over you to the bottoms of your feet.

No, I'm not crazy, If you've ever been there, you know what I mean. If you haven't been there, I sure hope you get the blessing soon. It's something you will never forget. That's just part of that old time religion.

We had singing, praise and worship. Back then, the pastor and some of the people would visit others in their homes. Life seems too busy for that now.

Sometimes the spirit of the Lord was so strong, we'd never get to the sermon, Music, and spiritual words can be the most influential part of the service. There are still so many of the old Spirit filled songs that I miss.

I remember having hayrides at Christmas time when we would all get together, and go caroling to all of the parishoners. Afterwards, we would have a big bonfire, and burn hotdogs, and roast marshmallows. And then we would sing some more. But the Spirit of the Lord was right there with us.

We would have old time revivals to. That's when you'd feel the spirit of the Lord all around.
An evangelist would come from other places, and we would have special music, some from the members of our church, and some from the visiting ministers.

I can't even imagine what the Father thinks now, when He looks down, and sees all of the things that go on in the world He created for all of His children. How it must hurt Him to see that everything now, is not at all what He had planned for His family. And that's what we are, I'm glad to be a part of the Family of God.

I will be glad when the trumpet sounds, and we all get to meet Jesus in the air. Life here, is not worth living, when all you see around you is evil. I want to see Jesus, and all of God's singers gathered around the throne, singing those old songs, and know that Jesus is there.

My life here on earth, as I feel it, is to tell others of the old time religion, when all was good, and faith was strong, and praise and worship were openly felt, and wonderfully shared with all those who love the Lord.

Everything is so charismatic now. People say change is good. But the new songs just don't feel like the Spirit is there. And maybe I don't handle change very well, but I loved those days, and those songs. I'm one of these people that feels like "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Life goes on, but I hope they still sing those old songs in Heaven.
