Friendship: Where to draw the line

I remember one afternoon when my best friend Arnold came to visit and see my mother as she was not well.I also remember us driving out to a local carwash to wash and clean his recently purchased vehicle.Soon after coming back i sat in the driver's seat to do a short drive around the neighbourhood.Arnold was on his mobile phone during this time.It was a successful drive. As i pulled over to the nearby curb to park, the nightmare began. It was pretty shocking and it haunts me even today. The car veered off and went straight into the electricity pole we were facing. It all happened in an instant. He immediately busted out of the smoking vehicle and repeatedly shouted my name in a scornful angry voice. He was really hurt. His car, his hard work this was the end,I followed and tried to comfort him but at that moment there was nothing i could do.I pulled myself togather and immediately thought of excercuting any neccesary obvious actions.i took our valuables from the vehicle and stood by the car, not able t establish a next step.He came back and forth several times and said the same thing over and over again."Gary look what you have done!".I was wordless.Neighbours came and since i was the onlyone around the advised me and some of them comforted me.i apologised for the commotion in an effort to disperse the accumulating crowd. One lady gave me a few tips and i closed the dorrs and locked the car and walked to my house which was a few yards away.i took a few more glances before closing the door.I had to tell my parents.i felt scared and guilty.i didnt know what to do.However the issue was latr resolved and my parents bought him a new car to replace the one i had crushed.Memories of this day haunt me.I cant even buy a car, i ride on a sports motorcycle. All because of the memories of that day.I am glad to say this though, this being one of the many bad things that could have ended our friendship, we are still best friends.I learned a lesson which i however dont have words to express.(real life story)
