Facing a storm as a Christian

Psalm 93:4 Mightier than the thunder of the great waters, mightier than the breakers of the sea-the LORD on high is mighty.

I loved the storms that I experienced in Scotland. I ministered at a West Coast fishing village called Dunure. The church meetings were usually held at the village hall, which was right next to the beach. After spending hours discussing the church's vision and mission, I would walk outside into the torrential rain and watch the waves come crashing down onto the rocks and over the harbor.

The sea was black and boiling over. The wind was relentless and the rain stung my face. It was absolutely wonderful and terrifying at the same time. As I struggled to walk up the harbor path to get to my car, I felt very small and insignificant. At the same time, as the forces of nature furiously whipped around me, I remembered that there was One who was mightier than the thunder of great waters and who had in fact calmed the chaotic breakers on Lake Galilee. It was a great comfort to know that the Lord of all Creation, who had the power to hold back the mighty waves, also held me closely in His hands.

Some of us may be experiencing some sort of storm in our lives right now, and it may seem to be that chaotic circumstances threaten to overcome our faith by wresting control from our hands. In those times, let's remember that God is mightier than anything we go through and that He holds us in His precious hands.
