And so you survived
not because of your brilliance
or wealth
or education
and sometimes you lament
the thin pages
of experience that hold more
weight than all of science
reduced to a line
Man's Search for Meaning.
What joy in one small pea
floating in a watery broth
coveted among the shriveled
dirty and forlorn.
gray stripes on their backs,
gray days and walls as if
color, too was possessed
by the Reich and stripped
from your life.
Even the small gold band
that bound you to her
was melted and merged
back unto itself
as her face inside your head
year after excruciating year
dappled into mist.
and all that you knew
was no longer true
and yet
she was gone
and yet
you still gave
a name to the nameless
the undying
and to me.
