What Makes a Resume Stand Out?
A resume jumps out from the stack when it paints a picture of an ideal employee to the person reading it. Or it can be noticed immediately for all the wrong reasons. It's a challenge to decide which of your attributes to highlight in this very powerful document. But it's well worth the effort. You need to tinker with your resume, keeping it current and fresh.
You want the resume to stand out for good reasons, right? In that case here's a list of "Don'ts"
Do Not
1. A ten page resume may get a quick glance, but anything over three pages and you're looking at the waste can. Busy recruiters just don't have the time to read your mini- biography. So, no matter how interesting and educational your experiences have been, you won't be able to go into extreme detail about each of your prior positions.
2. A resume with spelling errors, poor grammar and lack of proper formatting will not get read, beyond the first or second blooper.
3. Any kind of soiling visible on the paper of your resume will send it on a fast trip to the shredder. If there's a tiny coffee stain, a grease mark or, worse still, unidentifiable marks of any kind, this resume will be sterilized by fire at your local dump.
4 .Don't create lies on your resume. You'll suffer total humiliation if found out.
So now you have an idea what not to include in your resume, we need a list of what you should include.
1. The best length for your resume is three pages or less. This is where you have to prune back any experience not appropriate to your employer. You can select the work history that best applies to the position you want. Expand on those jobs which are most like the one you're after. If you can show how seemingly unrelated work experience will in fact be an asset to the employer, that's a bonus.
2. Please let your humanity shine through. You're a real person. If you just send a point form list of your previous jobs, it doesn't give the employer a feeling for you as a person. Some companies encourage resumes with a one or two sentences telling something about yourself and your work history. You can find out about this by calling the Human Resources Department of the company , and asking for resume guidelines. But remember, no autobiographies!
