What we have here is popularly called a "no-brainer." Of course we should pay for elections through our tax dollars. This is the only way in which we can compete with, and even nullify the power of, the lobbyists.

It is a hard fact in the United States that elections, especially at the national level, are bought by special interests. Gun lobbyists, labor unions (I am a labor unionist, by the way), multi-national corporations and any other entity that wants to put its foot into Washington's door.

One of the glaring examples of how powerful a multi-national corporation can be is the recent (15 yr.) history of Haliburton. Vice President Cheney had to relinquish his position as head of this corporation to run for VP, but not before he had nearly doubled the corporations revenues the few years before running. He accomplished this through government contracts.

Kellogg, Brown and Root is a division of Haliburton that does contract work for our government (us), on a no-bid basis, in Afghanistan, Iraq and throughout the world. KBR is primarily involved in construction work. The Blackwater Group, recently spun off by Haliburton is a company that contracts out mercenary soldiers to the government (us) on the same basis.

A recent comment by one of the Blackwater officials defined one of the company's goals as having a training base in all 50 of our states. I don't know about you, but this scares the living hell out of me. They are currently in North Carolina and building in Illinois.

"We the people" cannot even imagine the kinds of power these people have over our everyday lives, let alone our elections.

We should demand that our representatives in Washington make use of the IRS forms to collect a few dollars from the taxes already owed by each of us taxpayers. It has been tried on a voluntary basis and has failed. But, as we are the government ourselves, we should make sure we all fall in line and push for this measure so that candidates can compete equally with money from us.

I believe that will lead to elections of ideas more so than elections of TV time paid for by dollars from "who knows where or whom!"
