Lake Tahoe is wonderful place to take your ski vacation during the winter months. However not all ski resort locations might be the best choice for you if you are traveling with kids.

When you hit the slopes with children there are some important things to consider such as mountain safety, family friendly services, ski school for lessons, and overall ambiance of the resort.

In the Lake Tahoe area there over a dozen mountain resorts to choose from for your ski vacation. Which ones should you choose for your family ski trip? Well my favorites from many years of skiing at Lake Tahoe with and without kids are the resorts that make it easy to get in and get out.

First on my list is Northstar at Tahoe which is located just north of Lake Tahoe between the lake and Truckee. Northstar has plenty of accommodation's at the foot of the mountain to choose from and they range from hotel style to multi bedroom condo rentals. Their ski school facilities are top notch. They can take your kids and put them in appropriate level lessons that will have your child skiing like a pro in no time. The mountain is very diverse and offers a good range of beginner lifts and runs that will help your child gain confidence in their skills without fear. They also have great food and lodge facilities on the mountain to keep you fueld and warmed during your ski days. The top of Northstar features some great advanced runs that will keep the expert skiers in the family happy all day long.

Next on the list is a resort that is not right at Tahoe but just a few miles to the south but yet worth the trek to ski on their mountain. Bear Valley Resort is located on Hwy 4 about 60 miles south of Lake Tahoe. This is the ultimate family resort location. Bear Valley is low key, uncrowded, friendly, and fun to boot. At the village you will find a variety of great accommodation's as well as food. Once you are up at the mountain you can put your child in their ski school which we found to be great when our kids were in the 4-8 years old range. They loved the teachers and the mountain gave them the confidence to learn at a pace they enjoyed. Bear Valley is very family friendly.

Right on Lake Tahoe's west shore is the Homewood Ski Resort. This resort rises right up from lake level and features some of the most spectacular vistas of Lake Tahoe. Ski here on a clear sunny day and you will be blinded by the crystal blue waters of the lake and bright white snow of the mountain. This cozy resort spells family ski fun. The ambiance is not flashy and fancy but the comfort level is very high for your clan. A nice BBQ eating area on the back deck is an always welcome retreat after a good day of skiing at Homewood. Hint: Take your family to Homewood and pose on one of the overlooks for a wonderful family shot with the Lake in the background. A great postcard!

These are my favorite family ski resorts at Lake Tahoe. Well maybe one more to mention. Alpine Meadows is a fun place to ski and has a nice ambiance to boot. Ski the front in the morning and the back bowls in the afternoon.
