If anyone over 30 were to think back to their late teen to mid-twenties years (if they were totally honest with themselves) most people can probably think of one or two occasions when having their antics photographed and publicized to the world would have been nothing short of completely humiliating. Bad decision making is not the exclusive territory of the rich and famous. Wealth and fame just seem to make the level and scope of the bad decisions all the greater.
Britney and Lindsay have many things in common besides their long strings of bad decisions. They both had early fame, big windfalls of money at a young age and parents who lacked the stability and maturity themselves to successfully guide their young girls through the battlefield of fame. Now, they both appear in headlines that read like the list of "Top Ten Warning Signs of Depression".
Another thing they share is the fact they themselves created this monster of media that follows and documents their every move. Lindsay created hers by years of showing up to the opening of an envelope, as long as there were cameras, all the while becoming notorious for cat fights and bar brawls. And who can forget classic Britney moments such as grabbing K-Fed's package on the hotel balcony while she grinned at the cameras? Or the release of that disaster of amateur video called "Britney & Kevin Chaotic"? And if that wasn't enough to place themselves at media ground-zero, both advertised to the paparazzi their "panties optional" approach to wearing mini-skirts.
This seeming madness isn't for show - it's real. These are the real stories of real people, warts and all. They're human, they have flaws as do we all. They're young and sadly immature for their age and they've spent half their lives being catered-to like modern-day royalty. True, it would be fantastic if all the wayward Hollywood starlets could turn on a dime and become the next Jodie Foster or Brooke Shields who spent their late teens and early 20's buying the very best college educations their new-found riches could buy. However, I doubt it would sell a lot of magazines.
Some people take a long time to learn lessons. Some just have to make bad decisions and suffer the consequences over and over again until deciding to change things for the better. Some never learn the lessons and never change. Will Brit and Linds change? Are there really responsible, smart women deep down inside of them? Who knows? Only Britney and Lindsay know the answer to that. Hopefully one day they'll stop making appearances at nightclubs and make appointments with really good shrinks.
