If you enjoy Jewel or Jan Arden, Grand Ole Opry member Alison Krauss is sure to become a must have for your collection. Her new album "A Hundred Miles or More: A Collection" (Rounder Records 2007) is an excellent place to start. The pleasant combination of country, bluegrass, and adult contemporary created by Union Station are a perfect match with Alison's soft flowing melodies. Each of their 12 releases carries a consistent theme, style, and mood ensuring there is something to satisfy all listening ears.
Shortly after her recording debut on "Different Strokes" (independent 1985) with her brother, Alison joined Silver Rail and later Union Station at the age of 16 recording "Too Late to Cry" (Rounder Records 1987). Her premier solo album "Got that Old Feeling" (Rounder Records 1999) not only made the top 75 on the Billboard Charts, but provided her her first music video and Grammy. Alison Krauss and Union Station has collected 20 Grammies (four of them in 2006), 7 CMA Awards, and the Great British Country Music Award for International Bluegrass Band of the Year four years in a row. After listening to "Now that I found you: A Collection" (Rounder Records 1995) it is no surprise this renowned fiddler embraced the opportunity to produce for the likes of Reba McEntire, Nickel Creek, and Alan Jackson.
Alison Krauss is one of my favorite artists because her songs not only invoke feelings of joy and sadness, but it is easy to feel a personal connection. Her styles also vary greatly. Soft love songs, fun bluegrass, and verses of loss are all done with pure and flawless perfection. Here are some of my favorites:
1. "Whiskey Lullaby" with Brad Paisley (Rounder Records 2006)
2. "Baby Mine" from "Disney: The Music Behind the Magic" (Disney Records 2006)
3. "Now that I Found You" "Now that I found you: A Collection" (Rounder Records 1995)
4. "When you Say Nothing at All" "Now that I found you: A Collection" (Rounder Records 1995)
5. "I'll Fly Away" "O Brother where art thou" (Mercury 2000)
6. "Somewhere in the Vicinity of the Heart" with Shenandoah (Capitol 1995)
7. "Restless" "Lonely Runs Both Ways" (Rounder Records 2006)
8. "Buy me a Rose" with Kenny Rogers and Billy Dean "She Rides Wild Horses" (Dreamcatcher 1999)
9. "Missing You" with John Waite "A Hundred Miles or More: A Collection" (Rounder 2007)
10. "The Reason Why" with Vince Gill "The Reason Why" (Universal 2006)
