"Gospel" may mean 'good news', but little of that sort of thing commonly comes out of them. Sure, this fairy-tale provides comfort for millions of people who don't have the strength of will to live life for its own sake, but consider the costs that this warm-and-fuzzy illusion has demanded.

Holy Wars -'nuff said.

Idiots - There are two main kinds of idiots. Of course, we're all familiar with the religious zealots, who, like the terrorists, make war on all the heathens who don't believe "the Truth" - because, God knows, "Thou Shalt Not Kill" doesn't apply to non-believers. See "Holy Wars".

The second kind are the argumentative types. They are out to save YOUR soul, because, of course, they've already heard the 'good news', so they know best. They've found comfort in a tale of death, tyranny, and tragedy, and want to force it on you, too. Best of all, they love to use logic to prove the validity of their views. For example: "See, I know this is the true word of God because it says so right in the book itself..." Or "Millions of believers couldn't be wrong..." Of course, that doesn't apply to the millions who believe something else...

Sociopaths

- These are slightly more logicaly inclined folk who have heard the 'good news' too, and take it literally. Quoth one such minion of chaos: "Jesus paid for my sins already. I'm just making sure he gets his money's worth."

If self-delusion is your drug of choice, then the Gospels are for you. The book has a few decent morals in it, but, frankly, is so convoluted with complexity and contradiction, you're better off reading Aesop if you want a lesson in ethics from a book of fables.

"Good News", though? If you call genocide, societal dysfunction, oppression, plunging the world into the Dark Ages (technically, this is only the fault of the Catholics), and, of course, helping billions devote their lives in willing servitude to those smart enough to recognize a myth when they see one, "good news", then, yes - the Gospels are the best thing since the invention of the wheel.

For the rest of us, though, the Gospels have been the single greatest retarding factor in our growth as a species in all of history, one of the leading causes of death over all of time, and have been the tool most widely used to herd the sheep-like masses into unwitting slavery and self-oppression.

This is not to say that it does not have some redeeming qualities. For one, there IS that self-delusion part. For another, it does bring up several interesting questions
