Web site reviews: MySpace.com

Myspace. Surely, you know what it is. Everyone knows what it is. It is one of the biggest internet websites of all time. It's also a breeding ground for attention starved kids who don't know how to type, and think the number of friends they have on a website is a correlation to how cool they are in real life.

It's basically a social networking site where you get to customize your own little slice of the internet, and show it off to all of your "friends." 99% of whom you probably do not know in real life, and never will. It's what Geocities was 10 years ago.

Let me expand on that last one. It makes "making a website" easy for the computer illiterate. The exact group of people who should NOT have websites in the first place. Now, you might get mad at me for this, saying, "well everyone deserves a chance at the internet!" Yes, I agree. Everyone does deserve a chance at their own successful website on the internet. However, Myspace is not it. People need to learn how to make sites, and to appreciate sites before they can have sites. Otherwise you get pages loaded with tons of useless crap that make even the most powerful computers in town slow to a crawl. (I know this one first hand. There are sites on Myspace that make my PC cry.) So many blinking useless graphics, so many custom cursors, so many useless videos, on top of annoying colorful, oversized text used in an effort to "express onesself."

Now, don't get me wrong. Myspace is a GREAT idea. Idea being the keyword. The execution of it, however, isn't so spectacular. It's an ad-drowned website, that hardly works half the time. It's slow, it's cumbersome, and it has some of the most annoying people I've ever witnessed with my own two eyes.

Now, you may be asking, "Why do you know so much about it if you hate it so much? Wouldn't you steer clear of it?" Good question, but honestly, yes I use the site. Yes, on a daily basis. No, I don't have an annoying cumbersome page, and no, I don't have 10,000 friends. I use it simply because it is a very convenient tool to communicate with my friends, and it does provide a bit of ways to keep my distracted long enough to kill some time. Now, don't get me wrong, if I had a better way to communicate with ALL of my friends, I would definitely cut Myspace out of the picture, but let's face it. Sometimes we have to bite the bullet and do things we don't have the best opinion of.

I think if the company that owned Myspace actually cared about anything more than making a few easy bucks by exploiting millions of people, the website could be a fantastic place. Honestly, I think if they were to change things around, for the better, their user base would grow some more, because the people that hate it would realize that is has changed, and that it isn't as terrible of a place as it was before.

With that being said, I hope whoever runs Myspace eventually realizes what I think, and maybe they'll do something about the countless bugs and slowdown problems to make the place slightly better. They have the userbase, they don't need to worry about the money anymore. They can spend a few weeks upgrading servers and I doubt they would see a dent in their wallets. With as many ads as that site has, it can spare a few grand for some servers.
