Used car ethics: How much blame lies with the buyer

Purchasing an automobile can be a daunting task and there are some important responsibilities that the purchaser must bear. Although cars salesmen or saleswomen should never lie about a material issue relating to the automobile, they will often avoid full disclosure. If they are aware that the transmission is shot, they'll likely mention it to the buyer, but if the car just makes some noise at 55 mph, they'll likely turn up the radio so you don't notice. The subtle issues are those for which the purchaser must bear full responisibility. Test drive the vehicle and listen and feel for any slight variance in normal performance. If you hear or feel anything out of the ordinary, you should mention it to the salesperson and also make sure it is investigated by someone qualified to do so. Before finalizing the purchase, make sure that you have had it looked over by a mechanic or a car saavy friend. It is better to spend a little money on the inspection prior to the purchase than to spend a lot of money on a car that won't last a month on the road. Overall, be very thorough when purchasing any automobile and make sure that you fulfill your responsibilities as the buyer.
