Driver safety: Prevent road rage

All of us have experienced road rage at one time or another during our lives. Drivers get into a hurry, and sometimes we don't consider the consequences of our actions. A bad mood, such as getting fired from a long-term job, can lead to horn-honking, hand signals and cursing that we would not normally do on a regular do. Then, as we look in our review mirror we see our child peering back at us and we have never felt so horrible. "Why did I do this? How can I control my anger behind the wheel? I don't want them learning these bad words." all go through our head. However, the heat of the moment is only temporary and our anger won't last. What we do in the heat in the moment is not usually taken seriously unless we act on our impulses-but there are ways to prevent road rage.

On a day when there's high traffic, there are drivers cutting other drivers off escaping an accident by seconds. Or, on the freeway a driver is tailgating you so closely that if you had to slam on your brakes for any reason at all, your life would be in danger as well. People driving too fast, and swerve to cut you off at the last second. While none of these are right or fair, these are only a few examples of road rage. There are more severe ones that endanger lives each day. For example, there are creeps out there that target women traveling alone. They honk their horn or imitate cops when they aren't one. Beware of these, and don't be afraid to call 911. When I began driving at age 16 my Grandpa told me, "You can't control what's behind you, but you have constant control of what's in front of you." When it comes to road rage, we can try our hardest to prevent it.

First, when you get behind the car's wheel to drive be sure you are calm and content. Your mood is crucial when you're driving because not only is your life at stake but also everyone around you. If you get in the car angry, you are more likely to drive faster and break the traffic laws. Speeding comes easier when you're distracted, and you're more likely to be vulnerable to distractions. If you're in a negative mood, you're more likely to be late to events you're going to and, in turn, be less prepared. In contrast, when you are calm you obey the traffic laws and become a better, safer driver. You're more collected and organized, and your thoughts remain clear. While you're more focused, you're more likely to control your speed and be aware of your surroundings. Chances are when someone cuts off, you'll just brush them off instead
